You Are Not Alone

A more masculine chest contour

Gynecomastia is common, may affect one or both breasts, and can be a significant source of self-consciousness.

As a man, it can be hard to live with large, over-developed breasts that make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. Although this condition is rarely talked about, you are not alone. Gynecomastia, a Greek word for “woman-like breasts,” is a common concern among men. It can affect one breast or both and can be a significant source of embarrassment.

Our board-certified plastic surgeon corrects gynecomastia with male breast reduction surgery in Marietta, Georgia, to give men from metro Atlanta, Roswell, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, and surrounding areas a flatter, firmer-looking chest.

Cosmetic surgery is not only for women. More men are realizing that looking their best can positively affect self-esteem and confidence and may motivate them to exercise more and feel better about themselves. About the Procedure

How male breast reduction creates a firmer chest

The procedure reduces fat and glandular tissue from the breasts and, in more extensive cases, can tighten excess skin. The result is a chest that appears flatter, firmer and better contoured.

At our practice near Atlanta, male breast reduction is performed as an outpatient procedure in our state-certified operating rooms and typically takes about an hour and a half. An incision is placed in an inconspicuous location, either along the edge of the areola—the darker skin surrounding the nipple—or in the underarm area.

Excess glandular tissue, fat and skin are removed as needed. If tumescent liposuction is used to reduce excess fat, the cannula is inserted through the same incisions. When gynecomastia consists primarily of fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be used.

Personalized Surgical Approach

Treatment depends on the type of tissue present

Dr. Harkins selects the appropriate technique after evaluating whether the concern is caused by glandular tissue, excess fat, loose skin or a combination.

Glandular Tissue

Excision may be used to remove firm glandular tissue through a discreet incision near the areola or underarm.

Excess Fat

Tumescent liposuction may reduce fatty tissue through the same small incisions and may be used alone when appropriate.

Excess Skin

In more extensive cases, loose skin may be tightened to help create a flatter and better-contoured chest.

Immediately After Surgery

What to expect as healing begins

Whether treatment involves excision, liposuction or both, you can expect some discomfort for a couple of days. This can usually be controlled with medication prescribed by your physician.

Bruising and swelling are expected for a period of time. You will be instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for a couple of weeks. It may take three months or longer for the final results to become apparent.

Recovering from male breast reduction

Recovery is normally fairly quick, but returning to work, exercise and unrestricted activity should follow your physician’s individualized guidance.

First Few Days Some discomfort, bruising and swelling are expected; prescribed medication can help.
A Few Days If you feel well enough, you can normally return to work within several days.
A Couple Weeks An elastic pressure garment is generally worn continuously during early healing.
Several Weeks Avoid physical or sports activity that uses the chest muscles excessively.
3+ Months Final results may take three months or longer to become apparent.

Protect Healing Scars From the Sun

Avoid sun exposure to your scars for at least six months. If you are in the sun, use a strong sunblock because sunlight can affect the skin’s pigmentation.
