Breast Lift in the Atlanta Metro Area

Restore a firmer, more uplifted breast shape after pregnancy, aging or significant weight changes with a procedure personalized to your anatomy and goals.

Restore Shape & Firmness

A customized approach to an uplifted silhouette

A breast lift reshapes sagging breasts and repositions them to a more youthful, aesthetic position.

Are you looking to regain the figure you once had before childbirth, aging or weight loss? Over the years, pregnancy, nursing, significant weight changes and gravity can have dramatic effects on the breasts. As skin loses elasticity, the breasts often lose shape and firmness or develop a flatter, droopier appearance.

Breast lift surgery at our metro Atlanta practice can help restore your figure and confidence. Our board-certified plastic surgeon welcomes patients from Roswell, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs and beyond. Call (770) 421-1242 or request a consultation to find out whether breast lift surgery is right for you.

Candidacy & Goals

Candidates for breast lift surgery

A breast lift, also called mastopexy, raises and reshapes sagging breasts. Every procedure is customized around the amount of lifting needed, skin elasticity, existing breast tissue and the result you want to achieve.

Restore Breast Position

Tighten lax breast skin, reposition the nipple and reshape breast tissue to create a firmer, more uplifted appearance.

Refine the Areolas

Enlarged areolas—the darker pigmented skin surrounding the nipples—may be reduced when appropriate for the surgical plan.

Adjust Breast Volume

Some tissue may be removed when a smaller breast is desired, or implants may be added when increased or restored volume is part of the goal.

Surgical Planning

About the breast lift procedure

Breast lift surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The length of surgery depends on the complexity of the plan.

Careful Measurements

Before surgery, measurements determine the planned nipple and areola position, incision lines and the amount of excess skin to remove.

Lift & Reposition

Incisions follow the surgical markings. Excess skin is removed, and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher level while remaining attached to underlying tissue.

Reshape & Close

Skin flaps are closed around the remaining breast tissue to create the new contour. Keeping the nipple attached may preserve fairly normal sensation and, in some cases, breastfeeding ability.

Minor Sagging

Incision Around the Areola

For minor breast ptosis, or sagging, the incision may be confined to the area surrounding the areola.

More Significant Sagging

Additional Incision Lines

For more severe ptosis, incisions may extend around the areola, vertically to the breast crease and horizontally within the crease. Scars are permanent, but every effort is made to minimize their visibility.

Healing & Results

Recovering from breast lift surgery

Recovery progresses gradually, with activity restrictions and follow-up guidance tailored to your healing.

Dressings or a surgical bra may be placed after surgery. The breasts are typically bruised, swollen and uncomfortable for the first day or two. Most sutures are placed beneath the skin; any external stitches are usually removed in about a week. Discomfort is generally minimal and can be controlled with medication.

Temporary loss of feeling in the nipples and breast skin can occur and usually improves as swelling subsides over approximately 6 weeks. Many patients return to fairly normal activities within a week. Overhead lifting and strenuous sports should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks, and Dr. Harkins will advise when vigorous activity is appropriate.

1–2 Days Bruising, swelling and discomfort are most noticeable
About 1 Week Many patients resume fairly normal activities
3–4 Weeks Avoid overhead lifting and strenuous sports
About 6 Weeks Temporary numbness often improves as swelling subsides

Scars may remain lumpy and red for several months before gradually becoming less obvious and, in some patients, fading to thin white lines.

Safety & Longevity

Risks and long-term breast lift results

Thousands of women undergo breast lift surgery each year without major problems. Potential risks include infection, hematoma, asymmetry, changes in sensation and poor healing. As with any operation, revision surgery may occasionally be needed in the future.

Your improved breast shape should remain fairly constant unless significant weight changes or pregnancy occur. Natural aging continues, so some future drooping is possible. Overall, most patients are extremely pleased with their improved, uplifted breast shape.

  • Review your medical history and expectations thoroughly
  • Understand incision placement and permanent scarring

Frequently Asked Questions

Breast lift FAQs

What does a breast lift change?

A breast lift tightens lax skin, raises and reshapes the breast, and repositions the nipple and areola. Enlarged areolas may also be reduced when appropriate.

Should I wait until after pregnancy?

If you plan to have more children, postponing surgery may be appropriate because pregnancy can stretch the breasts again and offset the result. Breastfeeding ability may also be affected.

Can breast implants be added to a breast lift?

Yes. Some patients combine a breast lift with implants when they want to improve breast position while also adding or restoring volume.

Where are breast lift incisions placed?

Minor sagging may require an incision only around the areola. More significant sagging may require incisions around the areola, vertically to the breast crease and horizontally within the crease.

How long does breast lift recovery take?

Many patients return to fairly normal activities in about a week, while overhead lifting and strenuous sports are typically avoided for 3 to 4 weeks. Individual recovery varies, and your surgeon’s instructions control.

Are breast lift scars permanent?

Yes. Breast lift scars are permanent, but every effort is made to minimize them. They often remain red or raised for months before becoming less noticeable over time.
