A brow lift can address low or sagging eyebrows, forehead creases and frown lines to create a smoother, more rested and youthful-looking upper face.
A facelift improves the lower portions of the face. A forehead or brow lift is designed to address signs of aging higher on the face.
Often, when we think of plastic surgery, we naturally think of the facelift. But a facelift actually improves the lower portions of the face only. To correct signs of aging in the upper face, a forehead lift—also called a brow lift—may be appropriate.
Patients from Atlanta, Roswell, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs and surrounding areas choose this procedure when their eyebrows sag or sit low, creating a tired appearance. A forehead lift can also soften deep creases across the forehead, frown lines and furrows between the eyebrows and sometimes across the nose.
Brow lift surgery can rejuvenate the upper face on its own and is also commonly combined with eyelid surgery, laser skin resurfacing or facelift surgery when broader facial rejuvenation is desired.
A brow lift is not limited to older patients. Younger adults with naturally low brows or pronounced frown lines may also benefit when anatomy, muscle activity and individual goals support surgery.
Your eyebrows are low or drooping and create a tired appearance.
You have pronounced forehead creases, frown lines or furrows between the brows.
You have drooping tissue around the outer eye area that contributes to an aged or heavy look.
You want a smoother, more alert upper-face appearance and have discussed realistic expectations with your surgeon.

Lifting tissues around the eyes can create a more rested, alert and youthful appearance.
Dr. Corey Harkins evaluates the position of the brows, forehead lines, surrounding eye tissues and overall facial balance when planning forehead lift surgery.
Because brow position and aging patterns vary, consultation is an important part of deciding whether a brow lift should be performed alone or combined with another facial rejuvenation procedure.
The exact surgical method depends on the extent of correction, your medical condition and the approach your surgeon believes will provide the best result.
Forehead lift surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. It may be performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia depending on the extent of the procedure and the patient’s medical condition.
Incisions usually begin above the hairline in the scalp and extend within the natural contours of the forehead. They are designed to be inconspicuous once healed.
Through the incision, deeper tissues are addressed, the skin is redraped and excess skin can be removed. The surgeon can also modify or remove portions of muscles that contribute to wrinkling and frown lines, then lift the eyebrows to a more pleasing level.
The incisions are closed with fine sutures and the face and head are bandaged following surgery.
With a traditional forehead lift approach, the surgeon works through incisions placed above the hairline to address deeper tissues, excess skin and muscles that contribute to wrinkling and frown lines.
An endoscope—a long, thin tube with a light attached to a video camera—can be inserted through several small scalp incisions to allow the surgeon to see while working on internal forehead structures. This approach may not be appropriate for every patient.
Your surgeon will review the method or combination of methods preferred for your anatomy and desired outcome during your consultation.
Swelling and bruising vary from patient to patient, while postoperative discomfort is typically described as minimal and manageable with pain medication.
After surgery, you will be advised to keep your head elevated and restrict activities during the early postoperative period. Most sutures are removed within the first week, although some stitches in the scalp may remain longer.
Many patients are back to work within two weeks of surgery, depending on the amount of activity their job requires.
Complications are infrequent and usually minor, but all surgery carries risk. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the risks and benefits with you before surgery, and it is important to talk openly about your expectations.
Depending on your pre-operative condition, the change in your facial appearance may be subtle or dramatic. A forehead lift is intended to create a fresher, younger-looking upper face, and the improvement can last for years.
Because facial aging often involves more than one area, a forehead lift is frequently considered alongside procedures such as facelift or eyelid surgery when a more comprehensive result is desired.
