Your Procedure: Just the Facts

While each dermal filler product has its own unique properties, the information below can give you a general idea of why and how fillers are used.

  • • Fillers minimize common signs of aging and deliver an immediate result.
  • • For most hyaluronic acid fillers, allergy testing is not required.
  • • Dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to a year or more, depending on the product.
  • • For maximum effect, treatments are typically scheduled twice a year. Touching up before the product has fully dissipated may enhance the lasting effect.

What Aesthetic Concerns Can Dermal Fillers Address?

Dermal fillers are a versatile treatment option that can rejuvenate and enhance various areas of the face and body. Here’s how they work to address specific aesthetic concerns:

Tear Trough Filler (Under-Eye Filler)

Under-eye hollows create a tired, aging appearance, even if you’re well-rested. Fillers add subtle volume to the tear troughs, smoothing the transition between the lower eyelid and cheek. This treatment not only reduces shadows and dark circles but also helps to create a more refreshed, youthful look.

Filler for Acne Scars

Fillers improve the skin’s texture and create a smoother complexion. By lifting and filling in depressed scars, dermal fillers can significantly reduce their appearance. This is especially helpful if you’ve tried topical treatments or resurfacing procedures without success. The results are subtle but effective, providing long-lasting improvement with minimal downtime. Alternative acne scar treatments include laser skin resurfacingchemical peels, or microdermabrasion.

Filler for Static Wrinkles

Wrinkles and lines develop for different reasons. Dynamic wrinkles, or expression lines, are caused by squinting, smiling, frowning, and other ways we change expressions throughout our lives. They’re treated with BOTOX injections. Sun damage, diminished collagen production, and the loss of volume cause static wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. Fillers minimize the appearance of these wrinkles by adding volume.

Lip Fillers

One of our most popular cosmetic treatments is enhancing thin lips with fillers. Fillers can also address asymmetrical lips and improve their contours.

Filler for a ‘Weak’ Jawline or Chin

Contouring and defining the jawline and chin with filler is one of the most popular procedures on social media. Both men and women want a well-defined jawline and chin, but the aesthetic goals are different. For men, fillers can create a more robust and angular jawline and prominent chin, often associated with a masculine appearance. For women, fillers can sculpt a softer yet defined jawline, contributing to a more youthful and balanced facial silhouette.

Fillers for Facial Contouring

Even though fillers are usually associated with minimizing signs of aging, younger patients often get fillers to enhance certain facial features. Fillers can improve proportion and symmetry, creating facial harmony. We use fillers to enhance the definition of the chin, jawline, and nose and sculpt the cheeks.

Filler for Lack of Volume on the Hands

Many people overlook their hands when addressing signs of aging. The back of the hands can appear wrinkled when you lose volume. Fillers are an excellent way to create smoother skin on the hands that looks more youthful.

Dermal fillers offer a customizable approach to addressing these concerns, providing natural-looking results with little or no downtime.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Dermal Fillers?

While dermal fillers are an effective solution for many people looking to reduce the signs of aging and enhance their facial features, some people should refrain from using them. These include:

  • • Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women: The safety of dermal fillers has not been established for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
  • • Individuals with Severe Allergies: To prevent adverse reactions, anyone with a history of severe allergies, particularly to any of the filler ingredients, should avoid dermal fillers.
  • • People With Autoimmune Disorders: People with certain autoimmune disorders may experience complications or adverse effects from dermal fillers.
  • • Patients With Active Infections: If you have an active infection, particularly around the treatment area, you should wait until it has fully healed before considering dermal fillers.

When Should You Choose BOTOX Over Dermal Fillers?

Injectable fillers cannot treat every type of wrinkle. For dynamic wrinkles, or those caused by frequent muscle contractions around the eyes and brow, BOTOX® Cosmetic may also be beneficial.

What Is the Best Dermal Filler for You?

Many types of dermal fillers are available. During your consultation, you will be advised as to which product is right for your particular concern.

  • • Restylane: This cosmetic dermal filler is made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body. Restylane maintains its shape using the body’s own moisture that is similar to your own collagen.
  • • Restylane® Lyft: Formerly called Perlane-L, Lyft is another hyaluronic acid filler that is popular for adding volume to the mid-face and cheek area or reducing the look of nasolabial folds that stretch from the nose to the corners of the mouth. This filler’s gel molecules are thicker than other hyaluronic acid fillers. The product contains lidocaine to minimize discomfort and is injected on a deeper level than some other fillers. This makes it a great option for deep wrinkle correction, lip enhancement, and chin or cheek augmentation.
  • • JUVÉDERM: Made of hyaluronic acid with more crosslinks that can help it last longer. It is used for smoothing wrinkles and sculpting lips. Results can last 6 months to a year.
  • • JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC: Smooths away deeper facial lines and folds around the mouth and sculpts the lips. Results last up to a year.
  • • JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA® XC: Adds and restores volume to the cheeks and chin. The injectable gel produces nearly instant improvement to flat and sunken cheeks and undefined chins. Results can last up to 2 years.
  • • JUVÉDERM® VOLUX: Adds and restores volume to the jawline, defines the area between the jaw and neck, and reduces jowling in adults over the age of 21. Results last up to a year.
  • • SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM®: Enhances smoothness of the skin on the cheeks for a healthy, radiant glow. Technically not a filler, SKINVIVE is made with a modified form of hyaluronic acid. It is injected below the skin’s surface to help it retain its natural moisture. Results last about 6 months.
  • • RADIESSE®: Developed with safety and longevity in mind, RADIESSE is a new generation of injectable filler that offers superior versatility. What sets RADIESSE apart from other dermal fillers is its long-lasting benefits. The longevity of RADIESSE averages 11 months in the smile lines and approximately 1 year to 18 months in the nasolabial (cheek) folds.
  • • RHA® Collection: These fillers are formulated with resilient hyaluronic acid (RHA) that closely resembles the skin’s natural hyaluronic acid. They allow natural movement of facial features such as when smiling, talking, and laughing and continue to look natural when the face is at rest. Different filler options are made for superficial, moderate, and severe wrinkles and folds.
  • • Sculptra®: Sculptra and Restylane SubQ are other injectable materials that can be used for soft-tissue augmentation. This adds volume to facial areas such as cheeks, depressions under the eyes, and the chin area. Sculptra initiates an expansion of the body’s own collagen, resulting in long-lasting, natural-looking results.
  • • Autologous fat: Fat injections, technically called fat grafting or fat transfer, are another option for our Atlanta-area patients. With this procedure, your doctor can use your unwanted fat to add volume and fullness to wrinkles and sunken areas.

What is a Liquid Facelift, and Is it Right for You?

A liquid facelift is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure designed to rejuvenate the face using injectable treatments such as dermal fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic. This technique addresses signs of aging by restoring volume, smoothing out wrinkles, and enhancing facial contours. It can be an excellent alternative for patients seeking a more youthful look without undergoing facelift surgery.

Benefits of a Liquid Facelift:

  • • Unlike traditional facelifts, a liquid facelift does not require incisions or anesthesia, resulting in minimal downtime and faster recovery.
  • • The treatment can be tailored to address specific concerns such as volume loss, fine lines, and skin laxity in various areas of the face.
  • • Patients can see noticeable improvements shortly after the procedure, with full results typically visible within a few days to weeks.

Ideal Candidates:

  • • Individuals with mild to moderate signs of aging who do not require or desire surgical intervention.
  • • Those looking for a quick and effective way to refresh their appearance with minimal recovery time.

Lip Fillers Continue to be Popular Throughout the Atlanta Metro

Lip fillers provide several benefits that make them a popular choice for many patients:

  • • Lip fillers enhance lip volume, creating a fuller appearance.
  • • Fillers can balance uneven lips for a more symmetrical look.
  • • As we age, our lips lose volume; fillers can rejuvenate lips by restoring their youthful plumpness.
  • • Fillers can improve lip shape and contour, providing better definition.

Lip Fillers vs. Lip Flip vs. Surgical Lip Augmentation:

To better understand the differences between these lip enhancement options, here is a comparison of lip fillers, a lip flip, and surgical lip augmentation:

  • • Lip Fillers use hyaluronic acid to add volume and shape to the lips. Results typically last 6-12 months, depending on the type of filler used.
  • • A Lip Flip involves injecting BOTOX into the muscle just above the upper lip to relax them, causing the lip to flip outward and appear fuller. This procedure does not add volume but enhances the lip’s natural shape, with results lasting about 2-3 months.
  • • Surgical Lip Augmentation is a permanent solution that involves implants or fat grafting to increase lip size. This method is more invasive and requires a longer recovery period compared to nonsurgical options.

Tips for a Successful Lip Injection Appointment

To achieve the best results from your lip filler appointment, follow these guidelines before and after the procedure:

Before the Appointment:

  • • Have a thorough consultation with your provider to discuss your aesthetic goals and ensure realistic expectations.
  • • To reduce the risk of bruising, avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, and other blood-thinning medications and supplements for at least a week before your appointment.
  • • Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment to keep your skin hydrated and plump.

After the Appointment:

  • • Avoid touching or massaging the area. This helps prevent the filler from moving and ensures even distribution.
  • • Avoid lying down for at least 4 hours post-treatment to prevent the filler from migrating.
  • • Refrain from strenuous activities for 24-48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • • Continue to drink plenty of water to maintain hydration and help the filler settle properly.
  • • For a few days, avoid saunas, hot tubs, and extreme heat or cold to minimize swelling and bruising.

By following these tips, you can help ensure the best possible results from your lip filler treatment.

Achieving More Youthful-Looking Hands is Just an Injectable Treatment Away

The hands are often one of the first places to show signs of aging, but dermal fillers offer an effective solution to restore a youthful appearance. Fillers can rejuvenate the hands by adding volume, smoothing out wrinkles, and improving the skin’s overall texture.

This is how fillers revitalize the hands:

  • • As we age, our hands lose volume, making veins and tendons more prominent. Dermal fillers can replace this lost volume, giving the hands a plumper, more youthful look.
  • • Fillers help to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on the hands, resulting in a more even skin texture.
  • • By stimulating collagen production, fillers can improve the overall quality and elasticity of the skin on the hands.

With minimal downtime and immediate results, hand rejuvenation with fillers is a convenient and effective way to achieve more youthful-looking hands.

Dermal Fillers FAQs

Facial plastic surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis but may include an overnight stay depending on the extent of the procedure. Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples and extend within the natural facial contours in front of and behind the ears. If a neck lift is also being performed, a small incision may also be made under the chin.

Through these incisions, a surgeon addresses deeper tissues, redrapes the skin, and reduces excess skin or fat, then closes the incisions with fine sutures. Your head may be bandaged loosely to minimize bruising and swelling.

Dermal Fillers FAQs

  • How long do dermal fillers really last?

The durability of your filler results depends on the filler used and the treatment area. Most hyaluronic acid fillers, such as JUVÉDERM and Restylane products, can last between 6 and 18 months. Sculptra and RADIESSE are bio-stimulators and usually last at least 18 months to 2 years.

  • Is dissolving your filler safe?

If you get hyaluronic acid fillers and aren’t satisfied with the results, the filler can be dissolved with injections of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA fillers. It’s a safe procedure when performed by qualified providers.

  • How can I stop my filler from migrating?

Filler migration describes what happens when the filler drifts from where it was initially injected, creating unintended results. This can happen anywhere but is more likely in more active areas, such as the lips and forehead. Dissolving the filler if you’re bothered by the results is an option. The best way to avoid filler migration is to choose a skilled injector and avoid rubbing the area after treatment.

  • Absolutely. As mentioned above, combining fillers with BOTOX injections—a liquid facelift—is a common treatment approach. You can also get fillers with other skin rejuvenation treatments, such as facial peels or microdermabrasion.

Typically, facelift results last 7 to 10 years, but because this surgery turns back the clock, you can expect to continue looking younger than your chronological age indefinitely. The aging process continues, so the results of your procedure will change over time. After a few years, you may consider touch-up treatments or non-surgical services to help maintain a youthful look.

  • What’s the best age to start getting dermal fillers?

Women and men of all ages get filler injections for different reasons. Patients in their 20s get facial contouring filler treatments to enhance certain features, such as the lips, cheeks, or nose. Other patients get fillers in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and older to address signs of aging.
