What is the best breast implant material?

Breast implants have a solid silicone shell filled with either saline solution or elastic silicone gel. Both options are FDA approved, and each offers distinct advantages and tradeoffs.

Texture describes whether the implant’s outer surface is smooth or textured. Textured surfaces are designed to encourage scar tissue to adhere to the implant and limit movement. Teardrop implants use texture to help maintain orientation, while round implants are available with smooth or textured coverings.

Recovery & Results

Will my implants soften over time?

“Drop and fluff” describes the gradual process of implants softening and settling into a more natural position.

Breast implants can initially appear firm and high on the chest while tissues are swollen and tight. As swelling improves, the skin stretches and the muscles relax, the breasts begin to take on a softer, more natural shape and position as each implant settles into its pocket.

This process may take from approximately 6 weeks to around 3 months. Every patient is different, and it is not unusual for settling to take longer or for one breast to settle at a different rate than the other.
