What You Should Know About Eyelid Surgery

When it comes to facial rejuvenation, the first thing that comes to mind typically isn’t blepharoplasty. However, the skin around the eyes is often the first place to show signs of aging, and eyelid surgery is the most effective way to restore that area. In fact, eyelid surgery has become increasingly popular among patients at our plastic surgery center in Atlanta. Before you schedule your procedure, here are 5 important things to keep in mind:
- Finding the right doctor is important. The first thing you should make sure of when choosing a plastic surgeon is that he or she is board-certified. This means that your surgeon has completed 6 years of surgical training, passed oral and written exams, follows a strict code of ethics, and only operates in accredited facilities. Additionally, make sure your surgeon has specific experience performing eyelid surgeries.
- Being a little nervous is normal. Surgery is not something that should be taken lightly. Though there are few risks associated with eyelid surgery, it is normal to feel anxious about your procedure. A good way to calm your nerves is to do your research and ask questions before scheduling your surgery appointment. The more you know about what will happen, the better. For most people, anticipation and mystery about the surgery are the most unsettling aspects of any cosmetic change.
- Your end results will still look like you. Eyelid surgery provides natural-looking results. The goal of the procedure is not to change your entire face, but instead to give you a more rested and refreshed appearance. We want to take years off your appearance without taking away what makes you, you. Many patients report that friends and co-workers often notice an improvement but can’t pinpoint what exactly has been altered. Check out some of our patients’ before-and-after photos to get a good idea of your potential results.
- Post-op care is NOT optional. Follow your recovery instructions carefully and ask questions if you are unclear about anything. Swelling is normal following eyelid surgery, but it will subside more quickly if you do not initially wear eye makeup or contact lenses. You should also try to keep your head elevated as much as possible. We will provide you with more detailed recovery tips before your procedure.
- Patience is necessary during recovery. This is often the most difficult part of plastic surgery. Patients are always eager to see their final results, but post-op swelling will prevent you from seeing your surgical outcome for several days. Try to keep a positive attitude during this time—it will all be worth it soon!
