The Secret to Loving Your Results

What’s the secret to getting plastic surgery results you’ll love? Data from the website RealSelf.com shows that it’s choosing board-certified doctors.

The website – a popular forum for plastic surgery patients to share their experiences and get answers to their questions – examined patients’ reported satisfaction with hundreds of cosmetic procedures. The study analyzed tens of thousands of consumer reviews in order to determine the satisfaction rate of patients who were treated by “core aesthetic providers” – board-certified plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons, and dermatologic surgeons.

This was then compared to the reported satisfaction rate for all providers, including doctors from other fields of medicine. The results show a staggering difference in satisfaction levels for patients who had injectable treatments. With rising popularity for many non-surgical treatments, patients often turn to non-specialists to save on costs for procedures like BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM®. Unfortunately, the results often don’t justify the savings.

Surgical procedures, such as liposuction, displayed as high as a 24% increase in the overall satisfaction level among patients who chose board-certified core-aesthetic doctors. The data clearly shows that board certification makes a difference in a person’s cosmetic enhancement experience.

As a double-board-certified plastic surgeon in the Atlanta area, I am well aware of the difference certification can make. It’s not just a piece of paper that says you can perform plastic surgery. The board approval process is intensive and requires a great deal of study, experience and specialized training—all important requirements for achieving excellent results with cosmetic procedures.
