Think Pink: October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

People in pink outfits walking outdoors, arm-in-arm, smiling, with others in the background, possibly at a breast cancer awareness event.
The plastic surgeons at our Atlanta-area practice have a special perspective on breasts, and this month, we want you to think about them, too. October has arrived with an explosion of fall colors, but one color you won’t find in the trees is meant to get your attention. Pink is everywhere to remind you to pay particular attention to your breast health. Although no one knows exactly what triggers breast cells to grow abnormally, we do know that all women are at risk for developing breast cancer, and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with it during their lifetime. To keep your breasts healthy, it’s important to schedule regular mammograms to screen for any abnormalities and to perform monthly self-checks to catch any changes in your breasts. Here are some other things you should be aware of about breast cancer:

  • Know the risk factors. Certain lifestyle or genetic factors can increase the likelihood of breast cancer. A few of these factors are menstruation at an early age, family history, alcohol consumption, and taking hormones.
  • Know the signs. You probably already know that if you discover any lumps or hardening of the breasts, you need to see your physician immediately, but many women are unaware that any changes in the nipple including pain, swelling, or discharge can also be signs.
  • Know prevention techniques. Although you can’t change genetic factors, making lifestyle changes can have a positive effect on your health. Maintain a healthy weight, exercise, and avoid or limit your consumption of alcohol and fat.

Think pink this October — schedule an appointment for a mammogram and make a commitment to yourself to perform monthly self-checks on your breasts.
At Plastic Surgery Center of the South, we support breast cancer awareness all year long. To learn more about how you can help out with the cause, or to learn about breast reconstruction, call our office at

Gift Yourself in Time for the Holidays

Everyone wants to look good for the holidays, but with so many activities and so little time, it’s often one of the items pushed to the bottom of the list. Now that the temperatures in Atlanta have cooled, breast augmentation could be just the procedure to get you ready for the holidays.
Breast augmentation has long been a top procedure. With a variety of implant choices, you can achieve natural, realistic results while increasing your size. Breast augmentation can help give you larger, fuller breasts, add volume and symmetry, and help with sagging. If you’re wondering how you could fit breast augmentation into an already busy schedule, read on about the process:

  • Consultation: At your consultation, your surgeon will help you choose the size and type of implant that is best for you and create a surgical plan to help you achieve your personal goals in a timely manner.
  • Procedure: Your surgeon will have you decide between the various incisions and placements available. The procedure lasts an average of 1 to 2 hours.
  • Recovery: Although everyone heals at their own rate, the general guidelines are fairly standard. In the days after surgery, you’ll have some discomfort and swelling, but you should be able to return to a non-strenuous job within a week. You’ll be limited to certain activities during the first 3 to 4 weeks, and you can expect to return to your regular routine and activities by the 6-week mark.

If you’ve been thinking about breast augmentation, fall is the perfect time to treat yourself. Cooler temperatures and cozy sweaters give you the privacy to heal unnoticed. By the end of 6 weeks, you’ll be back to your normal routine and ready to don that strapless dress you’ve had your eye on just in time for New Year’s Eve.

Keep Your Skin Radiant All Year Long

A good skincare regimen can help you maintain a younger appearance, but the right routine is also essential in preparing your skin for any type of facial procedure. Aging and environmental factors are the reasons many women are interested in facial rejuvenation or a surgical procedure such as a facelift. In Atlanta, where hot sun and pollution can take a toll on the skin, we hear these concerns from a lot of patients. Good skin, however, comes about from a number of factors, and having a good regimen that addresses your particular needs and skin type is essential.
The skin is the largest organ of the body. It’s what people first notice when they see you, so it’s important to have good habits and the right products to make the best impression. Here’s how a personalized skincare regimen can keep your skin radiant:

  • Appearance: Dead skin makes skin appear dull and lackluster, and because dead skin is dry, it’s also a sign that your skin is dehydrated. The right skincare products can slough away dead, dull skin, nourish the underlying skin, and increase cell turnover — all keys for having a better complexion.
  • Texture: Makeup can only go so far and even the best products won’t make skin look good if it’s unhealthy. Dry skin is often mottled with noticeable pores. Professional skincare products often contain tretinoin and exfoliating agents to help even out skin texture and diminish uneven tone.
  • Health: You’re only as healthy as your skin. If you have poor skincare habits, it could lead to problems with psoriasis and acne, and even rashes and sores. Additionally, when your skin is unhealthy, you’re more prone to scarring. A good skincare regimen will balance your skin and prevent bacteria and dirt that can clog pores and result in acne — or worse.

In the high-stakes professional environments of Atlanta—from the boardrooms of Buckhead to the innovative hubs of Midtown—presence is often defined by confidence. For many women, physical proportion plays a significant role in how they carry themselves and how their professional attire fits. However, the modern approach to breast augmentation has shifted away from the pursuit of maximum volume. Today, the focus is on "proportional harmony"—a strategic alignment between your surgical goals and your unique physical frames. At Plastic Surgery Center of The South, we view breast augmentation not as a standalone procedure, but as a corrective and enhancing measure designed to bring the body into balance. Understanding that "size" is a subjective metric is the first step toward achieving a result that looks natural, feels comfortable, and enhances your professional silhouette. Beyond the CC: Understanding the Mechanics of Proportion Many patients begin their journey by researching a specific volume, often measured in cubic centimeters (CCs). However, focusing solely on a numeric value is a common pitfall. A "300cc" implant will look radically different on a tall, athletic frame than it will on a petite, narrow-shouldered individual. As your dedicated partner in aesthetic health, our approach prioritizes your specific anatomy. We evaluate several critical factors: Chest Wall Width: The diameter of your breast tissue and the width of your ribcage dictate the "footprint" of the implant. An implant that is too wide can lead to unnatural contours, while one that is too narrow may not provide the desired cleavage. Existing Breast Tissue: The amount of natural tissue available to cover the implant affects the final aesthetic. This is a critical consideration when discussing the nuances of silicone vs saline options. Torso Length: A longer torso can often accommodate more projection without appearing "top-heavy," whereas a shorter torso requires a more subtle profile to maintain a balanced midsection. Selecting the Right Catalyst: Silicone vs. Saline The choice of material is often a matter of tactile preference and long-term maintenance. Both silicone and saline implants have distinct characteristics that contribute to the overall proportion and feel of the breast. Silicone Gel Implants - Silicone is frequently the preferred choice for patients seeking the most natural mimicry of human fat and breast tissue. Modern "form-stable" or cohesive gel implants maintain their shape exceptionally well, which is vital for maintaining a consistent profile under professional garments. They are particularly beneficial for patients with less natural breast tissue, as they are less prone to "rippling." Saline Implants - Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater and offer the benefit of a smaller incision, as they are filled after insertion. While they can feel slightly firmer than silicone, they allow for precise, intraoperative adjustments to volume, ensuring that symmetry is achieved to the milliliter. During your consultation at Plastic Surgery Center of The South, we provide a comprehensive breast augmentation size guide through physical "sizers" and expert assessment, helping you feel the weight and see the projection of each option before your procedure. The Professional Silhouette: Symmetry and Clothing Fit For many of our patients in the business community, the primary motivation for surgery is the "proportional fit" of professional attire. When the bust is out of proportion with the hips and shoulders, blazers, sheath dresses, and tailored button-downs rarely fit off-the-rack. A successful augmentation achieves "The Balanced Profile": Shoulder Alignment: The bust should complement the width of the shoulders, creating a classic hourglass or athletic V-taper. The Lateral View: Proper projection ensures that the profile is feminine yet understated, avoiding an aggressive appearance that may feel out of place in a conservative corporate setting. Upper Pole Fullness: We focus on a natural slope rather than an artificial roundness, ensuring the results are indistinguishable from natural anatomy. Establishing Expertise: Why Local Specialization Matters At Plastic Surgery Center of The South, Dr. Corey Harkins, MD, who is a board-certified plastic surgeon in greater Atlanta is committed to his core values of ethics, integrity, honesty and education. His practice draws patients from Atlanta and across the U.S. The geographic context of his practice allows him to understand the lifestyle of his patients. Whether you are prepping for a keynote presentation or maintaining an active lifestyle your results must be durable, comfortable, and visually seamless. Long-Term Considerations for the Executive Lifestyle Breast augmentation is a long-term investment in your self-image. It is important to consider how your results will evolve over time. Longevity: While implants are not lifetime devices, choosing the right size and weight initially can prevent premature sagging or the need for a lift (mastopexy) later in life. Overly large implants can strain the skin envelope over time; choosing a proportional size ensures longevity. Recovery Management: For the busy professional, we utilize recovery protocols designed to minimize downtime, allowing you to return to your leadership role with minimal disruption. Health and Wellness: We prioritize your systemic health, ensuring that your implants do not interfere with mammographies or physical fitness routines. Actionable Takeaways for Your Transformation If you are considering breast augmentation, keep these strategic points in mind: Prioritize Dimensions Over CCs: Focus on how the breast will look in relation to your shoulder and hip width. Test Your Wardrobe: Bring a favorite professional blazer or dress to your consultation to see how different "sizer" volumes change the garment's fit. Consult the Experts: Avoid "template" surgeries. Ensure your surgeon provides a customized plan based on your unique chest wall measurements. Understand the Material: Weigh the benefits of silicone's natural feel against saline's adjustable volume and smaller incision. Your Path to Proportional Balance At Plastic Surgery Center of The South, we believe that aesthetic procedures should empower you to feel more like yourself. By moving beyond the simple metric of size and embracing the philosophy of proportion, you can achieve a result that enhances your confidence both in your personal life and your professional career. Our practice is dedicated to providing an executive-grade experience, from your initial private consultation to your final post-operative milestone. We invite you to explore how a tailored approach to breast augmentation can refine your silhouette and bolster your professional presence.
